A 27-year-old Shiro Man has confessed to killing a 26-year-old Navasota man in Shiro August 6th.
Grimes County Sheriff’s Investigator Kindale Pittman says a call came in around 6:30 Sunday evening that someone had just been shot and was laying in the driveway of a home in the 19,000 block of State Highway 30.
Pittman reports officers arrived to discover a deceased male, identified as Henry Jesus Mayen, with a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Pittman says investigators learned of an on-going dispute between Mayen and Robert Jesse Bender from several witnesses, some of whom said they’d seen Bender shoot Mayen in the chest with an AR-15 after calling him towards his truck.
Apparently, Pittman explains, the deceased’s ex-wife and Bender had been dating. The victim and the suspect’s girlfriend had been separated, pending a divorce.
Prior to the shooting, Bender had reportedly told investigators of his intentions to kill his 19 year acquaintance, even going to trouble of sending him a profane text, warning of his deadly intentions in advance.
Pittman says the accused lives quite close to the crime scene. But at last report, at least, Bender was residing in the Grimes County Jail on a $250,000 bond, charged with First Degree Murder, punishable by up to 99 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
