Grimes County’s final Commissioners Court of February began with a moment of silence for the sudden, tragic loss of Precinct Four Commissioner Gary Husfeld, whose term ends this December.
And because his name is already on the November Ballot, unopposed, County Judge Joe Fauth explained that he will be naming the person who will serve until then.
As to the November Ballot itself, Fauth said the Republican County Chair, along with the precinct chairs within Commissioner Husfeld’s precinct will select a name to go on the November Ballot to replace Husfeld’s name.
That, Judge Fauth explained, is because Husfeld unexpectedly passed away. If someone were to have withdrawn, he said, the the Democrats would have been able to put a name on the ballot and you would have had two names on the November Ballot.
Coming to the judge’s possible defense, County Attorney Jon C. Fultz pointed out that any independent candidates can still register with the county to run for the position this fall.
Judge Fauth advised anyone wishing to be considered for Husfeld’s temporary replacement to bring their resume to the county’s Lucy Pope and fill out an application. And while he did not set a deadline, Fauth said he hoped to announce his decision at the last regular commissioners meeting this month, on March 28th.
