A Navasota man has been sentenced to prison for theft.
According to the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office, a jury convicted 54 year old Gary Carey of Navasota of theft between $1,500 and $20,000 on August 13th.
On Tuesday, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison.
In February of 2014, a Bryan resident reported his tractor, trailer and other equipment were stolen from a property in Brazos County. The Sheriff’s Office there discovered that the stolen items had been sold to a Caldwell man, who sold the items to a tractor dealership in Tyler. Deputies recovered the property and determined that the first transaction occurred on Craigslist. Police used Craigslist to track the sale to Carey, where he was identified in a police lineup by the buyer.
Authorities say the bill of sale provided to the buyer was also fake. It was the seventh time he has been convicted of stealing heavy equipment and vehicles.
Carey has a previous history with law enforcement, which includes six prior convictions for theft of heavy equipment and vehicles. He also has 10 previous felony convictions in five counties for forgery, theft and possession of a controlled substance.
