There is a petition now against the potential sale of the Gibbons Creek Power Plant in Grimes County.
The petition, which can be found here, notes citizen’s concern with both environmental and health factors.
The plant, which shut down in 2018 after nearly 50 years, has been up for sale since, an Bryan Texas Utilities has been working with an unnamed buyer to sell the coal fired plant.
The petition mentions pollution, alongside heart disease and other ailments, as their reasoning for keeping the plant shut.
Recently, BTU’s Gary Miller has noted there are two potential plans in place. One, is that the plant is sold, which has been a back and forth for months. If that falls through, there is money allocated in the 2021 BTU budget proposal for decommissioning the plant, and its structures, as well as cleaning the surrounding area.
Miller has said recently that he is not certain whether or not the potential buyer intended to reopen the facility.
If the sale goes through, Miller says it has to be approved by the City Council and the BTU board before it would be final.
