One local power generator is sponsoring scholarships for any Grimes County students graduating this year.
Tenaska Frontier Partners, owner of Tenaska Frontier Generating Station near the Shiro community, has announced their sponsoring of academic and community service scholarships this year.
Tenaska is one of the largest independent power producers in the country, has to date given out more than $800,000 in scholarships to roughly 900 students, in communities where generating facilities are located.
In Grimes County alone, to date, the program has awarded 153 scholarships totaling more than $120,000.
Applications are open for seniors graduating in Spring 2021 from high schools across Grimes County, who will be attending a two year or four year post secondary education program at an accredited institution. They are available through guidance counselors, and must be completed no later than February 12th.
Winners will be announced in the spring, with four total scholarships being awarded. All four will be $1,500 scholarships, totaling $6,000, and, in addition, one $1,500 scholarship in honor of the late Strathwell Johnson will be awarded for excellence in community service.
A committee from Tenaska will select the winners, and preference will be given to students who demonstrate they are prepared for college study, have good character, and rank in the top 50 percent of their class.
