A Brenham man was arrested on Saturday for assaulting a woman at a College Station gas station.
According to the College Station police arrest report, they responded to the Stripes gas station on Wellborn Road in College Station regarding a civil disturbance in progress. Once arriving, officers saw a gray GMC Yukon with damage to the driver side rear tire and rim, with the tire being flat.
Officers approached the vehicle, which inched forward, before stopping upon order of the officers. The driver stepped out, along with a passenger, who was sobbing and hysterical, according to the report.
The driver was observed to be heavily intoxicated, and said the passenger was being emotional, with nothing serious occurring between them. The passenger was intoxicated as well, but spoke with officers, and said the man had become angry over a conversation about past relationships and partner preferences, while hanging out at her sister’s boyfriend’s house.
The woman said details were fuzzy, but at some point in leaving their original location, the assault occurred. According to the arrest report, the man struck the woman several times, and slammed her head against the passenger window. Officers observed fresh bruises and swelling on her face, with lips bruised and the inside of her lips black. In addition, according to the report, her right eye was bruised around the socket, and the eye itself was red.
The an was arrested, and identified as 38 year old Sherman Dewayne Smith of Brenham. He was booked into the Brazos County jail on the charge of assault causing bodily injury. He was arrested previously in 2016 for assault family violence, and convicted in 2017.
Smith remains in the Brazos County jail on bonds totaling $10,000.
