A man with a gun in the vicinity of Iola ISD led to a short lockdown at the district Thursday afternoon.
The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office responded to the calls for a man walking with a rifle FM 39 near town around 2:06 pm Thursday.. Sheriff Don Dowell said the reporting party heard gunshots, but that has not been proven.
“We checked with people in the area at the time, utility workers, etc…no one heard any shots. We presume it was a valid call, we cannot confirm it was not a valid call. We did respond, canvas the area with numerous agencies…did not find anyone. He may have got out of here real quick…but, like I said, utility workers in the area were contacted immediately. They recalled not seeing anyone, or hearing any shots,” said Sowell.
The man was last seen on FM 39 going south, abut a half mile from the campuses. The precautionary lockdown was lifted and students released around 3:30 pm Thursday afternoon.
No further information has been released.
