On Sunday May 14, 2023, Navasota Police Officers responded to Highway 6 southbound between Highway 90 and Highway 105 East for a report of a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) versus pedestrian crash. Officers arrived on scene and located a male subject laying in the middle of the highway.
The male was found to be deceased upon officer’s arrival and had no identification.
Approximately 100 yards south of the deceased, Officers located a dump truck laying on its side in the median.
The driver of the CMV stated the roadway was dark and it was heavily raining. The driver observed an object in the middle of the highway and attempted to slow down. Upon getting closer, the driver observed the object was a person. The driver conducted an evasive maneuver attempting to not strike the person, but ultimately still struck the person and lost control of the vehicle rolling over in the median.
The CMV driver was treated on scene for minor injuries. DPS Troopers assisted Navasota Police Officers with the crash investigation. The pedestrian struck was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Mark Laughlin.
With the assistance from the Navasota Fire Department and Grimes County Sheriff Office, Highway 6 was shut down for several hours due to the rain and safety of officers, while the crash investigation was completed.
On May 15th, Navasota Police Investigators identified the pedestrian, which next of kin was notified. The pedestrian was identified as Michael Robertson (37) out of Houston, TX.
Navasota Police Investigators determined that Mr. Robertson had been walking northbound in the main lanes of Highway 6 prior to being struck.
