Fort Worth Zoo Makes Conservation History with Gharial Crocodile Hatchlings

The Fort Worth Zoo has made conservation history by breeding rare gharial crocodiles, resulting in two hatchlings.

Weighing up to 1500 pounds and about 16 to 20 feet in length, gharial crocodiles are one of the largest crocodile species in the world. The river crocodile from India has a long, thin snout, and the patterns on their backs, much like human fingerprints make them unique and identifiable.

They are the most endangered crocodilian species in the world.

Officials at the Fort Worth Zoo said they’ve been working to increase the population for decades, building an ideal environment for breeding and nesting, making them the only North American institution to have repeated the breeding process.
