SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ Work has begun to replace the moisture-damaged roof of the oldest building at the Alamo.
The Texas General Land Office says the Long Barrack, constructed in 1724, has closed until work is completed in October. The rest of the historic mission in San Antonio remains open.
Agency officials say over the years moisture has collected under the Long Barrack roof, which could jeopardize structural integrity.
Texas General Land Office spokesman Andy Hogue (hohg) said Tuesday that the roof replacement should cost about $345,000. State funds and a grant from the Ewing Halsell Foundation are paying for the work permitted by the Texas Historical Commission.
Some items on display in the Long Barrack Museum, which closed Monday, will be moved to the Alamo. The rest of the artifacts go into storage.
