Anderson-Shiro CISD is looking to move forward with becoming a District of Innovation (DOI).
The DOI’s purpose is to reward schools that are excelling academically with some benefits that charter schools receive.
Superintendent Scott Beene says there are a few benefits to becoming a DOI. The biggest benefit is the districts ability to be flexible with the academic calendar, meaning the school could start and end the school year sooner.
Beyond that thouhg, one of the bigger features of the DOI recognition is the flexibility with teacher certifications. This means anyone, say a local beautician, carpenter or auto mechanic could be hired to teach a class for career development and a student could potentially graduate with certification in a particular field.
The motion to pursue a DOI requires that, once announced, a committee must be formed, notice must be posted, and a public hearing scheduled within 30 days. That public session has been set for March 4, the next scheduled meeting of the board of trustees.
