Ben Leman helps get HB 1992, the “Spam Calls” bill, to the Senate

May 13, 2019 by Willy1550

We all have been victim of spamming phone calls from telemarketers, especially in recent years. To combat that, the Texas House has passed a bill that will stop telemarketers from spoofing your phone and it has been sent to the Senate.

State representative Ben Leman, who represents Grimes County, gave an update about the passing of HB 1992 on his Facebook page yesterday (Thursday).

In short with this bill, there are a few things that can happen. If a telemarketer is in violation of this bill, they are subject to an administrative penalty up to $1,000 for each violation.

The enforcement for the bill is done by the Public Utility Commission, the Attorney General or a state agency that issues a license to a state licensee as applicable.

Leman said they have conferred with the AGs office and the bill would improve their abilities in prosecuting spoofing activity.

The bill was also supported by Governor Gregg Abbott, Leman shared on his Facebook page.
