Calvert man sentenced to 50 years in child sexual assault case

June 14, 2021 by Willy1550

A Brazos County district court jury convicts and a judge hands down the punishment in a case of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

The district attorney’s office says the victim, who is now 14 but was eight when multiple assaults started, testified along with her mother and grandmother. That contributed to the conviction of 52 year old Melvin Dwight Johnson of Calvert.

During the punishment phase of the trial, prosecutors brought up Johnson making threats while in jail to the judge and one of the prosecutors. That contributed to the judge, who could have imposed a life term, to a 50 year sentence.
