A prominent Navasota couple has been announced as the 2021 Governor’s Volunteer Award recipient.
Governor Greg Abbott and First Lady Celia Abbott announced the winners of the 38th annual awards, with Chuck and Gena Norris from Navasota receiving the Governor’s Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award. And yes, it is THAT Chuck Norris.
The awards, presented in conjunction with the OneStar Foundation, honor exemplary service or individuals and organizations that have made significant and measurable contribution to Texas communities through service and volunteering.
This year, the Governor’s Volunteer Awards introduced three new categories to address the ever-evolving volunteer landscape: Innovation in Volunteerism, Excellence in Disaster Volunteering, and Volunteer Family of the Year. These new award categories highlight the resilience and adaptability of volunteers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Norris’ were nominated for Chuck’s involvement in founding KickStart Kids, a program that has benefitted more than 110,000 kids. He also was recognized for visiting hospitalized and active troops, serving as spokesperson for United Way, and being on the board of the Council on Bible Curriculum in Public School’s, and Rachel’s Challenge. Gena was recognized additionally for her service on the Advisory Board for the Council for Life, and Board of Reference on the Christian Film and Television Commission.
All recipients will be honored at an online awards ceremony, hosted by Honorary Chair of the Governor’s Volunteer Awards, First Lady Cecilia Abbott.
