COG’s High-Speed Internet Plan

December 2, 2017 by Willy1550

With the recent OK from county commissioners, Grimes County is onboard with the Brazos Valley Council of Government’s plan to bring high-speed internet service to all seven Brazos Valley Counties.

The COG’s Michael Parks says it’s thanks to a recent federal grant to build a network to serve local schools, clinics, jails, and public and non-profit healthcare facilities.

Once that is in place, he says, we are allowed under the rules of the program to leverage the excess capacity for a multiple of uses, including offering the quality and quantity of broadband to a local service provider who can then make it more available to the general public.

And what a service it will be!  The COG is bringing a 100 gigabyte fiber backbone to communities in Grimes County.  After that, Parks predicts local companies will realize they have an abundance of opportunity to serve residents, either through wired service to the house or wireless service in the more rural settings.

Park tells Navasota News it’ll be constructed in two fiber ring segments.  And the first, he adds, is already about half finished.

And while admitting it’s ambitious, Park predicts the entire project will be in and operating by June of 2019.  Watch this space.
