Concern Rises For Local Needy

Because there’s a lot of folks here in the County of Grimes in need, the volunteer director of Navasota’s Christian Community Services Center says she’s concerned about some of the budget changes the federal government is proposing next year.

Pat Gaston admits it is kind-of scary that they’re going to cut SNAP down; they’re going to cut heating and cooling standard allowances, and they’re also adding a new SNAP retailer application fee, which she fears would add extra cost to retailers taking part.

Gaston tells Navasota News, the Christian Community Service Center depends heavily on the Brazos Valley Food Bank, and she just got an email from its head, Theressa Mangapura, with even more bad news.

In the Emergency Assistance Food Program, which provides basic commodities everyone is supposed to get once-a-month through the USDA, and Mangapura reports is responsible for up to a quarter of the food it gets, Gaston reports they are going to cut that back, possibly to almost nothing.

In the meantime, Gaston says Mangapura advises that everyone contact their Congressman and Senators and let them know SPECIFICALLY what you are against.
