A 39-year-old Whitehall man’s malnourished animals have officially be taken from him, following the conclusion of the investigation into their seizure earlier this month by the Grimes County Sheriff’s Department.
The Sheriff’s Daniel Wagnen tells Navasota News as the department was seizing five of Jason Welzel’s horses and mules that had been judged malnourished; one of which was so far-gone that it unfortunately had to be euthanized.
The remaining animals had been under the county’s care until they were officially awarded to the department last Thursday.
Wagnen says, the department has already found new homes outside the county for the careworn equine, by two outfits that specialize in helping abused animals.
Following Wenzel’s arrest last Friday, Deputy Wagnen reports his family has decided to sell off the remaining animals, but will still be monitored by the sheriff’s office.
Wenzel is currently under a $30,000 bond at the Grimes County Jail, and could spend up to another dozen years behind bars if he is convicted of the six state jail felonies he is facing.
