A former Navasota standout athlete made football history this weekend south of the border.
Former Navasota quarterback, and state champion, Shelton Eppler led his Mexican League Football Team, Fundidores Monterrey to a win in Mexico Bowl V over the weekend. In doing so, Eppler became the first foreign quarterback to win the Liga de Futbol Americano Professional since its inception in 2016.
Eppler is the MVP front runner, and led the league in passing, with over 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns. It is his second international league, having spent last fall playing for Danish football team the Aalborg 89ers, taking them to their league semi-finals. There, he amassed over 1,200 yards and 17 touchdowns during his first season in professional football.
The championship was the first title for Fundidores Monterrey.
