Some new changes are coming to tobacco laws in the State of Texas.
Governor Gregg Abbott signed Senate Bill 21 into law on Friday afternoon. The new law changes the legal age of buying tobacco product from 18 to 21.
The law, set to begin in the fall, would apply to anyone buying cigarettes, e-cigarettes and other tobacco products. However, there is an exception to those serving in the United States Military or State Military forces, as they will still be allowed to purchase tobacco products with a valid military ID.
Anyone born on or before August 21st or 2001 will be grandfathered in and the prohibition on these products does not apply.
Texas joins 15 other states that have raised the smoking age to 21.
