Starting today, October 20th, all Navasota ISD students must be in the classroom for in-person instruction, as the school board voted to discontinue the online option last week.
Many families told their stories to the board, and expressed their opinions on the matter at the meeting, with many in favor of returning to in-person instruction.
Superintendent of Instruction and Learning, Dr. Tracy Brewer, said that the figures alone told the district it was time to get the kids who simply chose the online option back in the classroom.
“What the data came back to indicate was, for the first six weeks, we’re showing that our remote learners are having a higher failure rate than our on-campus learners. And, we are also seeing attendance issues, to where our on-campus learners have a better attendance rate than our remote learners,” said Dr. Brewer.
Those online learners will be entering school with a bit of a new normal, as COVID-19 precautions go on with masks, separate water bottles, and so forth. And, as it is youths, there might be some adjustment time needed. But, Dr. Brewer says the kids have really embraced the changes this year.
“Our students have been great. I mean, they have been respectful, they have been considerate of any of the COVID expectations, or guidelines. For example, wearing a mask, they have been very compliant, and understanding, with all those regulations. But, the students seem to be adapting well, back on-campus,” Dr. Brewer said.
In-person instruction for all Navasota ISD students begins October 20th. The only exceptions for online learning are children who have been told to quarantine, students who show COVID symptoms, or children with special needs or medical concerns.
