For awhile now, people of the county have been essentially begging for a county animal shelter. Now, that dream is on the verge of coming to fruition.
At Wednesday’s meeting of Commissioner’s Court, the Grimes County Animal Rescue board member Dave Eagan gave an update on their most recent progress.
“I am pleased to announce that Grimes County Animal Rescue has been granted IRS 501c status…so we are now able to move forward with our fundraising efforts towards construction of an animal shelter for the residents of Grimes County,” Eagan said.
The approval of the 501c classification means that now, two of the biggest hurdles in the process have been cleared. Now comes the last phase, which has many parts beyond just raising money.
“Our next stages in this process are going to be recruiting volunteers to help, raising money, building a website and Facebook page…and then of course, designing and building a facility,” said Eagan.
Before moving on, Commissioner David Dobyanski wanted to make it clear that the hard work of those already sheltering the county animals is appreciated and they are not trying to railroad them with this proposal.
“We are not trying to put the people who are doing this already out of business, we want to stress that,” Dobyanski said. “We want to work with them to move this forward and take care of stray animals in the county.”
