Today we come together to celebrate and to honor the veterans who have so unselfishly, in so many, many ways, protected our democracy . . . Our freedom . . . Our very way of life. It is only because of them and their noble sacrifices that we can live in the land of the free. Because it is also the home of the brave.
And many others gather across our country to also remember and pay our deepest gratitude to those who have served our country.
Though our heroes are many in number, coming from all walks of life, they share several fundamental qualities. Each of them possess courage, pride, determination, integrity, selflessness and dedication to duty. All of the qualities necessary to serve a cause larger than themselves.
Your remembrance on this occasion is also one small tribute to those lost troops and their families. It’s a way to say, “we remember.”
From those who shivered and starved through the winter at Valley Forge, to the doughboys crouched in the muddy trenches of France, to the many platoons who patrolled the hot, steamy jungles of Vietnam. And now the brave young men and women facing freedom’s enemies in the mountains of Iraq, Afghanistan, and most recently, Iraq once again.
Thank you veterans for your service. Thank you for your ongoing, noble service. From those of us who have come to understand you as more than just our veterans. But as our heroes.
God bless our troops. God bless America. From all of us at Navasota News.
