A helicopter assisting with controlled burns in the Sam Houston National Forest crashed on Wednesday, according to DPS troopers.
The crash happened just east of Richards, near Bethel Road and FM 149 in Northwest Montgomery County. DPS troopers say at least one person – a U.S. Forest Service Fire Fighter – was killed. The two other passengers aboard were taken to a hospital in Conroe, where their conditions were last said to be stable. No names have been released.
The FAA and NTSB will be investigating the cause of the crash, as it is not known at this time.
Two controlled burns in the forest were planned for Wednesday. One burn was in Montgomery County near 149 along FS 219 and the other was in Walker County near New Waverly, FM 1375 and FS 233.
