Inmates at a state prison in Huntsville produce ten million license plates each year. That was part of a presentation at this month’s prison board meeting. In addition to inmates making plates from 850 designs, prison director Bryan Collier brought up a special project that is underway.
Assistant manager James Stewart says a second shift of inmate labor could be starting when they get the order for producing plates to replace paper tags.
Texas license plates have been made in state prisons since 1935.
