A dozen and a half members of the Navasota Grimes County Chamber of Commerce recently met at the Navasota Center for the latest edition of the ongoing Chamber Academy programs. And the Local Emergency Planning Committee’s David Lilly says it’s all because Chamber Director Johnny McNally discovered that fellow Chamber members would benefit from understanding when he came to one of the LEPC meetings about a month ago.
Both Lilly, the County’s Emergency Planning Coordinator, and Shiro Fire Chief Dan Sharon, who chairs the local LEPC, detailed just who the LEPC is and what it does.
Principally, they explained, the LEPC’s focus is about hazards; both identifying in their role of preparedness and, if need be, in hazard mitigation.
And to prepare for that possibility, Lilly explained about a grant they received four years ago to conduct a Commodity Flow Study, from which we discovered there’s quite a bit of hazardous materials going through the county over the rails. So, he went on, we felt we had to conduct an exercise to prepare our first responders in the event that we have an real derailment.
For more about our Local Emergency Planning Committee, Lilly invites you to their next luncheon meeting on Tuesday, March 20th in Navasota’s Las Fuentas Restaurant.
