Keith solid waste collection site closing in October

August 20, 2019 by Willy1550

A solid waste collection site in the county will be closing soon. At this week’s meeting of Commissioner’s Court, GIS and environmental Coordinator Kat Lee suggested closing the Keith dump site, as many in the area do not use it.

The dump sites are a service provided for the citizens and are not intended to make money. But,. Lee says the numbers show that the site just does not generate the traffic the others do.

The most in one day the Keith site pulled in, according to a three week survey conducted by Lee, was $62, which is 62 bags of trash. The low end for one day was $12.

For comparison, Iola generally can bring in $800 a month, and the Bedias site, the busiest in the county, has been known to collect around $2,000 a month

Lee says most citizens near Keith said they just use Twin Oaks landfill to dump instead of the site. She made an official recommendation to terminate the lease in Keith.

As for extending the hours of the other two dump sites? Lee proposed opening both the Iola and Bedias dump sites one day and a half more per week.

The Commissioner’s Court approved termination of the lease for the Keith solid waste collection site, which will take effect and officially close on October 1st.
