Madisonville DPS Trooper in Stable Condition Following Accidental Shooting

July 17, 2014 by Archive

MADISONVILLE, Texas (AP) _ A Central Texas trooper has undergone surgery after being shot in the stomach when his personal firearm accidentally fell from his truck and discharged.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Felipe Garcia was transported to St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan and was in stable condition Thursday.

DPS officials say the shooting happened Wednesday afternoon in Madisonville when Garcia was off-duty and finished a workout at a gym.

Trooper Jimmy Morgan says Garcia opened the door of his truck and his personal .22 caliber pistol fell out, hit the pavement and discharged.

Nobody else was hurt.

Garcia has been a Texas trooper based in Madisonville, about 90 miles northwest of Houston, for six years.
