May 2nd general election in Grimes County postponed to November 3rd

March 24, 2020 by Andre Perrard

The election set for May 2nd in Grimes County has been postponed.

City Manager Brad Stafford, at Monday night’s Navasota City Council meeting held by way of video call, said that Governor Gregg Abbott’s Disaster Declaration allows them to move the election to November 3rd.

As far as how that may affect elected positions until the election, City Attorney Cary Bovey says that it won’t creat much of a hiccup in any operations.

“Current office holders would continue to hold office until November 3rd because of a provision of the Texas Constitution called the ‘Holdover Provision,’ which allows an office holder to continue to stay in office until their successors are elected, take the oath and qualify for office,” Bovey explained.

The council unanimously voted to move the May 2nd general election in Grimes County to November 3rd.
