Funding for faster internet in rural areas is coming to a local energy co-op.
According to a release sent out on Friday, the USDA selected three rural broadband projects were for grant funding, one of which is Mid-South in Navasota.
In total, Mid-South Cooperative will receive $6.18 million to expand reliability and jump start broadband in the rural areas. The funds come from part of the USDA’s Broadband Reconnect Program, created to bridge the digital divide in rural America.
That is exactly what Mid-South CEO Kerry Kelton said as well, stating in the release that this will bridge the divide by “bringing rural families, schools and businesses to fiber-based broadband at gigabit speed.”
Mid-South, which serves around 25,000 people in Grimes and surrounding counties, will be installing a fiber-optic cable on poles currently in their Rights of Way.
