More than 4,000 sign petition for removal of Walker County Confederate monument

July 7, 2020 by Andre Perrard

The Confederate monument on the Walker County courthouse grounds, which was vandalized a couple weeks ago by demonstrators, now has a petition for its removal.

Groups, including Huntsville residents, Black Lives Matter, and the NAACP, are advocating for the removal of the monument, which was erected in 1956. The monument reads “in memory of our Confederate patriots. 1861-1865.”

The online petition calling for the removal now has over 4,000 signatures.

There were calls for the item to be discussed at the commissioner’s Court meeting there Monday, but was delayed. The county judge says that the issue should be discussed later this month.
