A couple weeks ago, on an episode of Grilling Stafford, it was mentioned Navasota City Council would be taking action on an amendment to city ordinance to allow alcoholic beverages downtown, and allow people to “sip and shop” all the time.
At Monday’s city council meeting, that amendment was approved, where Navasota Police Chief, and assistant city manager, Shawn Myatt was asked, before approval, if he thought this amendment would present any issues for the department.
“You cannot predict anything. But, I will say this. We have had Texas Birthday Bash for nine years, and we have not had a single incident, and that is a ton of alcohol served at that. I think our citizen’s are very responsible, the folks that come and visit us respect that, I just do not see that being a problem,” said Myatt.
Conversation ensued about what would be included, as the amendment was just focused on the main downtown area, in the vicinity of the birthday bash. But, council talked about approving that, and extending it down to 9th street, to include the Theatre Alliance, Chandelier Room, and more.
Council also mentioned another amendment to the ordinance, which was discussed by Myatt, and council members Pattie Peterson and Grant Holt.
“Can we exclude glass containers?” asked Holt.
“We can,” said Myatt.
“I should be in some sort of to-go container,” Peterson said.
“Anything taken out of the restaurant, that it cannot be glass,” said Holt.
“We can definitely write that in, if that is your recommendation,” said Myatt.
“I would really like to see something like that,” Holt finished.
It was the first reading of the ordinance, so council will return for a second reading at next meeting, with changes made to the area of the downtown district, and the containers.
