Navasota ISD issued a statement and sent emails to parents stating, “As you may know, recent events have caused some questions and concerns amongst our community, especially when it comes to the accessibility of your children enjoying the benefits and protections of attending school here in Navasota ISD.
By law, Navasota ISD educates all students who enroll in our schools, regardless of their immigration status. The district does not request or maintain information about students’ immigration status, as it is not required. Since 1974, confidential student information has been protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This law prohibits the sharing of information and/or records without a lawful subpoena/warrant or permission from the student’s legal guardians. The district will continue to follow all applicable laws and prioritize the safety and well-being of our students.
We want to assure our families and our community that Navasota ISD remains committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and high-quality public education for any and all school-aged children within our district’s boundaries or approved transfer students. Public education is guaranteed to all children, regardless of immigration status, under federal and state law. We encourage you to continue sending your children to school with confidence. We will continue to provide them with the education they deserve in a safe environment.
