Navasota Junior High student wins two karate state championships

November 16, 2020 by Andre Perrard

8th grader Grace Mendez won two state championships Saturday

A Navasota 8th grader has won two state karate championships.

According to a release from Master Benjamin Mendez, of KickStart Kids in Navasota, 8th grader Grace Mendez competed in the Texas Karate Organization (TKO) State Karate Championships this past Saturday, November 14th.

The TKO’s yearlong process started in January with live events and various regional tournaments. Eventually, the programs switched to a virtual setting after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mendez accrued several awards through the year, which earned her a spot in this year’s virtual state championships. She competed in two events, Traditional Forms and Creative Weapons, winning state championships in both.

She is a member of the KickStart Kids program in Navasota, as well as a member of the Martial Arts America – Navasota Competition Team.
