Navasota man sentenced to 10 years for intoxication manslaughter

August 19, 2019 by Willy1550

A Navasota man has pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter.

According to a release from the Grimes County District Attorney’s Office, 33 year old Daniel Herrera of Navasota pleaded guilty on August 15th.

In September 2017, authorities responded to an accident on Highway 6 around 3:40 am. Investigators determined that Herrera left Grassy Creek Trailer Park and got onto Highway 6. Herrera struck a Toyota Matrix, driven by 26 year old Bethany Shockey, who was working as an Uber driver during the crash.

The crash disabled Shockey’s vehicle, leaving her pinned and stationary in the southbound lane of Highway 6. Before authorities could arrive, another vehicle struck Shockey’s car and she was ejected from the vehicle, where she was pronounced dead.

Herrera was determined to be intoxicated at the time of the crash. During his sentencing, Herrera told the Shockey family he took responsibility for the poor choice he made, apologized and asked for their forgiveness.

Herrera was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
