A pair of crashes on highway 6 Sunday morning resulted in one fatality, and injured a police officer and firefighter.
Texas DPS says the first crash happened around 12:30 am Sunday, when the driver was traveling southbound on Highway 6 just 5 miles south of Navasota. The vehicle swerved off the road and overturned. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.
The driver of that car was identified at 31 year old Porscha Crawford of Navasota. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other vehicles were involved in that accident.
About an hour later, a driver crashed into first responders investigating the accident. Around 2 am, a Grimes County Deputy was sitting in his vehicle at the scene of the crash when a driver hit the back of the vehicle. That collision also injured a Navasota firefighter, and the car narrowly missed hitting another Sheriff’s Office deputy. The officer injured is identified as Deputy Swank Backhus and the Navasota firefighter is identified as David Kearney.
Both the deputy and firefighter were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later released.
The driver of the vehicle that caused the second crash was identified at 20 year old Avery Jimenez of Katy. He was arrested and booked in the Grimes County Jail.
Jimenez is charged with two counts of intoxicated assault causing serious injury and possession of marijuana.
DPS says both crashes remain under investigation.
