A new, large hotel might be making it’s way to Navasota.
Executive director of the chamber Johnny McNally presented an application at Commissioner’s Court recently for a tax abatement from AAKAS LLC, who want to build a Candlewood Suites near Dove Crossing.
“Estimated investment on the part of the company is $8,200,000, and would create a minimum of 15 new jobs, and possibly more, over the next several years,” said McNally.
County Judge Joe Fauth asked about the Reinvestment Zone, and County Attorney Jon C Fultz says it would be a zone for Grimes County, not Navasota, even though the hotel lies in the city limits.
Fauth also pondered the Hotel Occupancy Tax, and if the county benefits in any way.
“The statue I looked at [10 years ago], was bracketed so that only certain counties could get HOT Funds,” said Fultz. “Our county was not described. That may have changed, no one has asked me to look…but at that time, it remained such that it was not open to every county.”
Ultimately, as with recent tax abatement requests, the court decided to send the request to a committee, who will determine the status of the application.
Noted as well by Sandeep Patel of AAKAS is that the hotel would be an Extended Stay Suites.
