New sanctuary approved for Mount Cavalry Baptist Church after spending a century in original building

November 10, 2021 by Willy1550

Mount Cavalry Baptist Church of Navasota is getting a new place of worship.

Up for approval at Monday night’s city council meeting was a conditional use permit for a new sanctuary at their location at 508 Peeples Street. Guadalupe Diosdado, the Community Development Director for the city, said Planning and Zoning approved the plans with two small changes recommended.

“One was to modify the grading of the parking lot to minimize runoff at the driveway entrance. The second was to add additional landscaping to the project. So, we feel both of those requests have been met,” said Diosdado.

Quantisha Garrett from the church spoke about why the time has come for a new building, after over a century.

“It is 106 years old, we did some remodeling, but at this time we are just trying to get a new sanctuary  to worship in,” said Garrett.

Council approved the conditional use permit for the new sanctuary on Peeples Street. There was no timetable given for construction.
