The Navasota City Council held a budget workshop on Monday to discuss fiscal year 2024-25 budget considerations, goals & priorities along with consideration and possible action to provide feedback and direction to the City Manager concerning prioritizations of projects, programs, and operations for the current fiscal year 2023-24.
Among the items discussed was the “Reprioritizing of Budgeted Funds,” which during the fiscal year 2023-24 budget process, Council asked staff to provide a listing of possible budget reductions.
City Manager, Jason Weeks, also provided a list of possible budget reductions for council to consider, the top being The Texas Birthday Bash.
Weeks provided Council with a breakdown of the budget for the event for the current fiscal year.
It was noted that the loss amount does not include the overtime pay to city employees, making the budgeted loss much greater, and how those funds could be better allocated for other city projects.
Weeks relayed that he understands the community’s interest in continuing the event, along with council’s agreement that it’s become too much for the City to handle, it was suggested to work with a third party to handle the event keeping Navasota as the title sponsor, as well as the Texas Birthday Bash moniker.
