According to a Press Release from the Grimes County District Attorney’s Office that reads in part,
On Monday, March 4th, 2024, 35 year-old Cory James Middleton pled guilty to Evading Detention in a Vehicle, a third degree felony.
On March 16th, 2023, Grimes County Sheriff’s Deputy Braden Copeland initiated a traffic stop on HWY 30 in central Grimes County. The vehicle being stopped was under surveillance by DPS for illegal activity.
The vehicle came to a stop and Deputy Copeland made contact with the occupants.
The driver was identified as Cory Middleton.
During the contact, while the Deputy was communicating with dispatch, the suspect vehicle took off, and a pursuit was initiated which went from HWY to FM 244 toward Iola. The suspect vehicle traveled in excess of 100 mph and drove through a fence off CR 103 near Iola where the vehicle was located abandoned with methamphetamine, and the suspects fled on foot.
Middleton was sentenced to 20 years in prison based on a plea agreement, and had an enhanced punishment range due to his extensive criminal history, including pending charges our of Brazos County.
Middleton is currently in custody awaiting transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
