The Brazos Valley has a new semi pro football team starting up in Navasota. The Brazos Valley Cobras are gearing up for their first season this spring. We spoke with president and head coach of the cobras, Lydell Crawford about the league they are joining.
“It is an existing league that the Cobras are joining. There are about 4 different main leagues in the state and we are joining the Crossroad Amateur Football League. They have been in existence for about 6 or 7 years now,” Crawford said. “In that league will be a total of 24 teams, which will consists of two divisions and 4 conferences…we will be playing all the Houston teams for our regular season games.”
The team is set to play their home games at Rattler Stadium.
Coach Crawford wants the organization to be about more than just football. He wants to be involved in the community and hopes to motivate some players to pursue their education as well.
“This is a semi-pro football team. And what it consists of is young, adult men from ages 18 to 35 and the intent if threefold. One is to give these young men a second opportunity to maybe go back to school. ..what we do, we allow the kids to give us a ten school wish list and in the middle of the season, we’ll have film. We send film, stats and a short bio to the school,” Crawford explained. “And if the coach or school likes them, they contact us and we refer them to the players. It also brings some football entertainment to the city when there is no other football. Finally, giving back to the community by helping in nursing homes or whatever it may be. That is the purpose of this organization.
If you are between 18 & 35 years old and would like to try out for the team, or if you would like to help as a trainer, Crawford has a standing invitation for you
“We are still looking for many players in all positions…if you are interested in playing or sponsoring, or just want to help out as a trainer, you can get in contact with me,” said Crawford.
