State senator Charles Schwertner of Georgetown, whose district includes Brazos and Grimes County, is accused of sexual misconduct with a University of Texas graduate student.
The Austin American Statesman describes in detail a sexually explicit image and text message the unidentified woman says she received from Schwertner following an on-campus event this summer. The Statesman received a statement from Schwertner’s campaign manager that says in part the senator categorically denies any knowledge of the accusations leveled against him, and that Schwertner hopes to make clear to U-T he played no part in the behavior described in the story.
Two U-T officials told the Statesman that if the allegation is determined to be true, Schwertner could be banned from campus. A third official told the Statesman U-T is also considering hiring outside legal counsel to investigate further.
Schwertner, a U-T alumnus, is seeking his second full term in the state senate.
