Shiro man sentenced to 25 years for 2017 murder

September 23, 2019 by Willy1550

A Grimes County man has been sentenced for a 2017 murder.

The Grimes County District Attorney’s Office in a press release said that 29 year old Robert Bender of Shiro pleaded guilty to the murder of 26 year old Henry Jesus Mayen. Grimes County District Attorney Andria Bender called the case a “senseless tragedy.”

In August 2017, authorities were called to a shooting on Highway 30 in Shiro, where they found Mayen with a gunshot wound to the chest upon arrival. CPR was performed, but he died on the scene.

According to the DA’s office, Bender and Mayen had been in a verbal altercation earlier that day of the shooting. Mayen, who was upset due to his estranged wife living with Bender, Mayen had made threats toward Bender. Then Bender, upset over the altercation, returned to confront him. Bender then shot Mayen with a rifle, and even performed CPR on him after struggling with him. The two had, at one point, been friends.

On Monday afternoon, Bender was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
