A standoff that lasted 8 hours near Snook ended with the death of a Somerville man, and a Burleson County Sheriff’s Deputy being shot.
The incident happened Tuesday afternoon around 6:45 pm on FM 60 near Snook. That is where 41 year old James Malatice Smith of Lyons shot Deputy John Pollock, who was serving an arrest warrant, and barricaded himself in the house. Pollock was hit in the chin and jaw, according to the Burleson County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 3 am Wednesday, Smith exited his home under the guise of surrender, and fired a weapon at a DPS trooper, striking him in the arm. Officers returned fire and struck Smith, who died at the scene.
Pollock is the Chief Deputy in Burleson County, and remains in stable condition at CHI St. Joseph in Bryan.
Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area on FM 60, as a criminal investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released.
