State leaders plan to have a final vote this week, to ask voters to approve a constitutional amendment that will create what is being promoted as the largest property tax relief plan in Texas history.
A compromise announced yesterday (M) by the house speaker and the lieutenant governor was then endorsed by the governor. The 18 billion dollar package includes spending 12 billion in state money to lower local school property taxes. The Democratic House Caucus pointed out that the proposal no longer has a supplemental pay increase for teachers of between two and six thousand dollars.
The compromise also increases the homestead exemption to one hundred thousand dollars.
