TDCJ links death of Grimes County inmate possibly to COVID-19

May 18, 2020 by Willy1550

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is possibly linking another COVID-19 death to the Wallace Pack Unit in Grimes County.

In a release last week, the TDCJ said that 71 year old Daniel Thompson died on May 5th at a Galveston hospital. He was transferred from the Pack Unit to the facility on April 30th. Thompson had many pre-existing health conditions. However, the preliminary autopsy suggests COVID-19 as a contributing cause of death.

Thompson has served 24 years of a 50 year sentence, which stemmed out of Harris County.

In total there are 677 TDCJ employees, staff or contractors who have tested positive for COVID-19 and 1775 offenders who have tested positive. There are now 102 employees and 451 offenders who have medically recovered from COVID-19.

The Pack Unit is one of 40 prison’s in the TDCJ system currently on a precautionary lockdown, which may be extended for 14 days to the most recent positive result.
