The Polar Vortex Strikes Again Bringing Arctic Air to Grimes County

February 18, 2025 by Willy1550

An Arctic air mass will reach our area overnight prompting a “Cold Weather Advisory” that will go into effect tonight from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m., and an “Extreme Cold Watch” that will be in effect from late Wednesday night through Thursday morning.
Here is what that means, what we can expect, and how to prepare, according to The National Weather Service:

For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 15 degrees expected.
For the Extreme Cold Watch, dangerously cold wind chills around or below 10 degrees possible.

These are in effect for the areas of Austin, Brazos, Burleson, Colorado, Grimes, Houston, Madison, Trinity, Walker, and Washington Counties.

Impacts include very cold temperatures and wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes if exposed and unprotected.

Precautionary and preparedness actions include:

Dressing in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you go
outside.

To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to
drip slowly.

Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly.
Do not use generators or grills inside.

Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.

Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
