March 31, 2022 by Andre Perrard

A reminder that you have another week to get registered for voting in the May elections in Grimes County.

Registration ends April 7th, which is this Thursday. Early voting begins April 25th, and will go through Tuesday, May 3rd, with Election Day set for May 7th.

The May elections feature two constitutional amendment. The first would authorizing the legislature to provide for the reduction of the amount of a limitation on the total amount of property taxes that may be imposed for general elementary and secondary public school purposes on the residence homestead of a person who is elderly or disabled in order to reflect any statutory reduction in the maximum compressed rate of the maintenance and operations taxes imposed for those purposes on the person’s homestead from the preceding tax year.

The second amendment proposes increasing the amount of the residence homestead exemption from property taxes for public school purposes from $25,000 to $40,000.

In Grimes County specifically, voters in Iola will decide on a $24 million bond, plus school board positions. School board positions will also be on the ballot in Anderson-Shiro CISD. City Council positions are on the ballot in the cities of Navasota, Bedias, and Todd Mission.
