Waco Area Sets Record For Child Removal Cases

July 13, 2014 by Archive

WACO, Texas (AP) _ Child abuse and neglect allegations around Waco are
skyrocketing and pulling a record number of kids from their families.

Records show that 232 children in McLennan County were removed from their homes between October and May. That already exceeds the number of removals in the area by Child Protective Services in all of fiscal year 2013.

State District Judge Gary Coley presides over CPS cases in McLennan County. He told the Waco Tribune-Herald (http://bit.ly/1tEU2G0 ) that removals related to meth appear to be rising.

Coley said that CPS last week took temporary custody of two newborns who tested positive for methamphetamine.

Removals statewide are only up slightly from 2013. Texas Department of Family
and Protective Services spokeswoman Julie Moody says drugs and domestic violence factor in many cases around Waco.
